School on “The heliospheric space plasma physics in the era of multipoint space missions”

A Course on “The heliospheric space plasma physics in the era of multipoint space missions”, directed by Prof. Francesco Berrilli (Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Italy), Prof. Giuseppe Consolini (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica – INAF, Italy), and Prof. William Matthaeus (Dept. Physics, University of Delaware, USA) will be held in L’Aquila, Italy, 18-22 May, 2026. The course is organized by Consorzio “Area di Ricerca in Astrogeofisica”.

The school will serve as a comprehensive introduction to the importance of multipoint measurements in the understanding of heliospheric space plasma physics from the Sun to the Earth’s magnetospheric environment. Multipoint measurements are indeed crucial for investigating phenomena such as magnetic reconnection, plasma turbulence, shock wave formation, and particle acceleration, as well as, the threedimensional structure of the solar corona, tracking the evolution of solar eruptions, and understanding the initiation and propagation of solar wind streams, which all play central roles in the dynamics of the solar and heliospheric plasmas as well as its interaction with planetary magnetospheres.

This course aims at providing an overview of the importance of multipoint measurements in studying space plasma processes occurring in the heliosphere to establish a critical connection between the data from future missions and complementary data from next-generation ground-based observatories.

The school is addressed to graduate and PhD students, young scientists as well as undergraduates in physics, astrophysics, heliophysics, space plasma physics, planetary sciences, or related fields. Early-career stage professionals are invited to apply as well.

Applications are due before 1 March, 2026.

SoHe 2025 announcement

We are glad to announce that the 5th workshop of the Solar and Heliospheric Italian Community (SoHe5) will be held from the 10th to the 12th September, 2025, at the Department of Physics of the University of Calabria, Arcavacata di Rende (CS).

The meeting will focus on the following scientific topics:

  1. Solar atmosphere: discussion on processes of magnetic field emergence, solar convection, MHD waves, chromospheric and coronal heating;
  2. Solar interior and solar activity cycle: internal structure of the Sun, magnetic dynamo processes and solar activity;
  3. Solar flares and magnetic reconnection: observations and modeling of flares, magnetic field reconnection;
  4. Solar wind: origin, heating, acceleration and evolution in the interplanetary medium of the solar wind;
  5. Space Weather: eruptive phenomena (coronal mass ejections), solar energetic particles, interplanetary shocks and connection with the near-Earth environment.

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss the most recent advances in the field, exploring novel ideas, and establishing new collaborations. Students and early-career members of the community are especially encouraged to participate.
